An outdated bungalow. An unsuitable layout. A special needs little girl in need of a beautiful modern adapted house that she can call home.
Set in a peaceful and family friendly cul-de-sac, the bungalow presented its usual wide corridors, good size rooms, single level living space, large and easily accessible outdoor areas. The ideal startup for someone in need of permanent assistance.
Despite its potential, the building needed modernising and improving on accessibility and specialised equipment. With that in mind, the parents bought the bungalow already in view of adapting it for their special girl.
The requirements were for front and garden wheelchair access, high-low bath and bed with direct ceiling hoist link, ample space for physio therapy, wide doors throughout, bespoke adapted kitchen and bathroom, and easy-touch switches. All with the primary premise that it would be integrated and imperceptible so not to look like a hospice.
JaM was commissioned to deliver a comprehensive project from inception to completion, including designing bespoke furniture, choosing sensory finishes and advising on the most adequate special equipment. It also encompassed project managing, contract administrating and liaising with suppliers and specialities.
To make sure that it all worked to the girl’s needs, JaM worked closely with Surrey County Council’s SEND and Woking Borough Council’s Disability Services to meet the EHCP goals and obtain the necessary grants.
The project is now complete with a unique large rear double extension, loft conversion and full interior refurbishment. While all the ground floor and garden are completely adapted for the present and future needs of this Rett girl, the parents decided to turn the loft into their private space so the spare room below could be for a future live-in carer.
